Any disturbance in menstrual cycle of woman is termed as menstrual disorder. It may be pains, delayed menses, heavy bleeding or any other problem. Almost every woman suffers from one or other disorder in her lifetime. More often any physical or emotional problem is considered to interfere with normal menstruation in woman. The disorder can not only bring stabbing pains, menstrual cramps and mood swings in any woman but sometime can be even more troublesome.
What is menstruation cycle?
Menstruation cycle is related with reproductive process in the woman physiology. It is ovulation process that occurs every month in all women. The cycle starts normally when girls reaches the puberty age at around 12-16 year of age and happens till the woman reaches menopause stage sparing the women who are pregnant. The cycle on an average is of 28 days but can vary between 23-35 days among different women. The cycle involves the passing of released egg in fallopian tube towards the uterus. If the egg gets fertilized by sperm it sticks to uterus lining or else it is shed-off in form of thick blood flow through vaginal canal. And this monthly phenomenon of passing blood is more commonly known as periods or menses.
Types of Menstrual Disorder
Any disturbance in regular monthly periods is term as Menstrual Disorders. Based upon the feature and types of trouble in menstrual cycle, menstrual disorders are divided into 5 categories. They are-
1. Amenorrhoea
Any unusual cessation in monthly bleeding process is termed as Amenorrhoea . However it can be of two types- Primary Amenorrhoea and Secondary Amenorrhoea. Primary Amenorrhoea when there’s delay or total absence of menstrual cycle in a girl beyond the age of 16. If a young girl do not have regular periods in her first or second year of menstrual cycle than it may not be Primary Amenorrhoea. But if she fails to sustain menses beyond that or does not have any monthly cycle at all by the age of 16 than possibly she is suffering from Primary Amenorrhoea. The cause behind this type of disturbance may be underweight, heavy excersizes, diet, illness, certain medication etc.
Secondary Amenorrhoea occurs in woman who suddenly stops having mestrual cycle but menstruated normally in pats. It can be a temporarary or permanent and is caused by theabsence of menstrual cycle for three months or more . The main cause behind the problem in most of the women is –weakness, stress, chronic disease such as rheumatic fever, infection, uterine fibroids, tumor and other pelvic inflammatory diseases etc
2. Dysmenorrhea
Dysmenorrhea connotes painful and high level of uncomfortably experienced during bleeding. It is marked by severe menstrual cramps, pains and painful blood flow accompanied by backache, dizziness, headache, nausea, vomiting and mood swings. It is also categorized in primary and secondary form. Primary Dysmenorrhea is experienced by 90% of women in the world and is caused due to excess of certain chemicals and higher level of prostaglandin in their menstrual blood .
Secondary Dysmenorrhea affects mostly older women and is caused due to certain problems like uterine fibroids, pelvic inflammatory disease and endometriosis. It is more serious problem and causes enormous pain and cramps.
3. Menorrhagia
This is abnormal uterine bleeding and is more common in women nearing menopause phase. It occurs due to hormonal disturbances lengthy periods and heavy flow during menstruation periods. The symptom of Menorrhagia is extreme tiredness and fatigued feeling in woman due to loss of iron-rich blood
4. Metrorrhagia
It is yet another uterine dysfunction beside Menorrhagia and is marked by bleeding or blood clotting experience between two menstrual cycles.
5. Pre-Menstrual Syndrome
It has been observed that approximately, 40 per cent of menstruating women. It tends to occur 3-7 days prior to the menstrual period.
