Licorice : History

Licorice : Morphological details
Licorice is widely grown in the sub-tropical and warm temperature geographical regions. It is a hardy herb, 2 cm in height. The plant is perennial, tall with pinnate foliage and lanceolate, imparipinnate green leaflets. Pods of Licorice are small with reniform seed. Flowers are in the shape of axillary spikes, papilinoaceous, nightand violet or lavender colored. Roots system consist of a main taproot and a number of runners emerging from it. They are brown and cylindrical in shape. Only the soft, fibrous, yellow taproot part is used for medicinal purposes. Licorice is a member of the pea family.
Glycyrrhizin and flavonoids are two important constituents of Licorice, due to which it possess antiviral property. In certain research conducted recently, it has been shown that flavonoids destroy Helicobacter pylori, causes a large number of stomach ulcers and inflammation. Liquiritin, an extract of Licorice, is found to be effective in healing a pigmentation skin disorder called melasma.
Licorice : Side effects
Intake of glycyrrhizin results in high blood pressure and water retention problems. This may be caused due to long-term intake of this herb. Intake of more than 7 grams of this herb, on a regular basis, causes reduction in serum testosterone level, by blocking the enzyme needed for the synthesis of this hormone. Fresh fruits and vegetables must be consumed in large quantity to increase intake of potassium so as to reduce the chances of Licorice side-effects.
