Gymnema Slyvestre, commonly known as Meshshringi or Gumar, is an anti-diabetic drug. This herb has been successful in controlling blood sugar level, but does not reduce it to below the normal sugar level. It is found to be better than insulin and other compounds like hypoglycemic sulphonylurea. Gymnema slyvestre: Morphological details
Gymnema slyvestre is a woody shrub, climbing on bushes and trees. It is an extensive, much-branched, twining plant. Leaves are ovate or elliptic-oblong shaped, sub-coriaceous, with apiculate and rounded at base. Flowers are minute, spirally arranged in lateral pedunculate or sessile cymes, mostly greenish-yellow in color. Follicles of this herb are terete, lanceolate, slightly curved and glabrous. Seeds are ovate-oblong, glabrous, winged and brown. August-march is the flowering season and winter season is the fruiting season of this herb.
