Ashoka is widely grown almost through out India, but occurs most prominently at an altitude of about 600 meters. Botanical description includes -
- Leaves - Leaves are paripinnate, narrowly lanceolate, 15.25 cms long, oblong and rigidly sud-coriaceous and the leaflets are 6-12 in number

- Flowers - Orange or orange-yellow in color, highly fragrant, about 7.5 - 10 cms across with dense axillary corymbs. Stamens are 7-8 in number and filaments are filiform
- Pods - Pods are flat and leathery
- Seeds - Seeds are 4-8 in number, ellipsoid-oblong and compressed
- Bark - Bark has wartyprotuberance on the outer surface. The bark is composed of compounds like tannin, catecol, sterols and organic calcium compounds
