Irritable bowel syndrome is characterized by cramping and infrequent bowel movement caused by abnormal functioning of colon or large intestines in stomach. The problematic colon results into spasm which are sometimes too short and other times too lengthy that normal intestinal process is disturbed and person experiences troubling bowel movement which is known as Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).
IBS results into high discomfort level due to frequent and disturbing bowel movement tends to interfere with your life and thus withholds you from smooth indulgence in work. The syndrome is identified as intestinal disease and is caused by dysfunctioning of colons and can be triggered by certain foods, stress or immune system. Broadly IBS is classified into 3 categories
- Constipation IBS
- Diarrhea IBS
- IBS with alternate Constipation and Diarrhea
This classification is done based upon the symptom that varies among IBS patient. Hindrance in colon mobility causes spasm that affects bowel movement. When contents and fluids inside the colon moves too quickly that lesser fluid is absorb. Hence resulting stool possess excessive fluids which marks the Irritable Bowel System (IBS) with Diarrhea. On the other side when colon movements are slow fluids are absorbed more than required and causes IBS with Constipation. However, some people have tendency to suffer from a shift in slow and fast movement and thus suffers from IBS with alternative Constipation and Diarrhea.

Is stress a cause of Irritable Bowel syndrome?
IBS is not a serious disease and unlike other inflammatory bowel disease does not end up damaging intestines or causing cancer. It is a functional disease caused by structural movement of colon rather than a disease caused by effect of biochemical etc. IBS is also known as them colitis, mucous colitis, spastic colon, or spastic bowel and functional bowel syndrome. But it should never be confused with constipation or inflammatory bowel diseases like ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease. IBS have more tendencies to originate in women than men and is very common after age of 16-20 years.
