A pain in head is Headache. And this panicking condition of aches in head is the commonest of suffering in the entire world. The reasons for headache can be many but still no one is untouched from the pains of headaches.

Though the degree of headache may vary from person to person but all of us are quite familiar to the headache phenomenon. Characterized by pain in head with effects in eyes, neck and sometimes shoulder also, headaches are often caused by tensions, hectic schedule or may be due to change in routine. These are the basic reasons which give rise to headaches. However headache can also happen with effect to other associated disease such as hypertension, head injuries, migraine, brain tumors, depression, sinusitis, and lot many. Based on the nature medical professionals divide headaches in to several categories. They are- Vascular, Inflammatory, Muscular stiffness (disturbances), Traction and Cervicogenic.

Symptoms of Headaches

Ayurveda associates headaches as pain which can be caused due to all three doshas- vata, pitta, and kapha. Ayurvedic name for headaches is shirahshool (shirah-head, shool-pain). As per the Ayurvedic science where vata results into severe pain, kapha creates heaviness in head. On the other hand headache due to pitta dosha is accompanied by mild fever.

Around 50% of people in the world suffer from headaches daily. And quite familiarity with the problem has made them much known to headache symptoms. Heaviness in head, severe pain in shoulders and neck and reddened eyes are the most common headache symptoms to name a few. However if headaches goes extreme, patient may also suffer from nausea, vomiting, blurred vision, facial pains, irritability with slightest sound and brightness, limitless pressure on muscles etc.

Types of Headaches

Medical professionals identifies headache due to two main causes-Primary and secondary. Primary causes mean direct reasons due to which a headache occurs and secondary causes mean the headaches due to other disease. Primary reasons include tensions, stress, muscles stretch and migraines. Secondary reasons include disease such as head injuries, brain tumors, meningitis, hemorrhages, strokes and other serious diseases. Based on the reason, a headache is often divided in following categories-

1.) Vascular- Migraine is associated with vascular headache type as it is caused by contraction in blood vessels and other chemical changes in brain. Migraine headaches hit most of the people in the age-group of 25-35. But it can occur in adult as well as child. It makes person hypersensitive and is repeated approximately four times a month with a one-sided headache. Other Vascular headaches are cluster, hypertension and toxics headaches

2.) Tension- This is the most common form of headaches among people. Regarded with daily stress and hectic schedules, a person tends to conceive it daily. It is highly recurrent and brings heaviness in head and also engulfs eyes, neck and shoulders.

2.) Cervical – This headache is caused due to cervical problem such as Spondylitis and it can be identified with symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, spinning effect in head.

4.) Inflammatory- This often leads to sinusitis headaches and is quite common form of headaches. It often arises due to allergies to any foreign substance resulting into congestion and swelling into mucous membranes in breathing system. It is quite severe and altering it is hard but can be avoided by adoption of preventive measures.
