Cough is widely experienced by almost all the people in the world. In a way it is natural process to release air from air passage or lungs with some noise. Usually, cough happens to expel something that is troubling throat or windpipe. This irritant (cough triggers) can be of any nature like environmental pollutants, smoke, pollens, humidity, mites etc
Most of the time cough is not considered as disease rather it is caused due to other disease such as asthma, cold influenza etc. As such cough is reflex action to relieve air passage out of irritant and is not that serious but if it takes form of acute cough and become chronic that is to say it persist for more than 2 weeks than it should be consulted with physician.
Types of cough
Depending upon the way the cough occurs, it is broadly classified into two categories- Productive and Non Productive Cough. In productive cough a patient experience phlegm discharge with every successive cough. This is due to the mucous that throttles in the throat and with cough are propelled out. Some people have habit gulping this mucous instead of spitting it which is very wrong practice and can be harmful to health. This accompanied purulent discharge is sticky in nature and may vary in color ranging from white, yellow, light green or bloody etc.
The second type of cough is non-productive cough and is also referred to as Dry Cough. This is known as dry because here cough is not accompanied by wet discharge phlegm. With every cough jiffy feeling of air is felt in throat and patient experience irritation while breathing.
What causes Cough?
Ayurveda defines Cough as kaasa and indicates it to be very troublesome and discomforting problem. Not only it creates problem in breathing but also makes people around you uncomfortable. As discussed above also it can be caused by number of factors, some of the major cause of cough are as follows-
Allergies to some foreign substance in environment are most common cause of afflicting you with cough. Your respiratory tract may be allergic to any particle under the sky depending upon your immune. Some people are allergic to dust while other may be allergic to dry wind, environmental pollution, humidity, dust, mites, pollens, cool breeze, pet dander, unidentified particles etc
Smoking is another pertinent and most identified cause to give you coughs. This happens as tobacco inhaled during smoking, often act as irritant to respiratory tract and give rise to cough
Asthma is bronchial problem that results into malfunctioning of windpipes and bronchitis. Thus contraction and congestion due to Asthma in respiratory system causes Cough
Medical diseases such as Cold and Influenza are, mostly accompanied by cough. Tuberculosis (TB) is most devastating illness that causes serious problem along with coughing as a major symptom.
Acid Reflux is yet another action of human physiology function that gives cough. Consequent to the action of acid reflux due to acids form in stomach, cough prevails
Tickle or frog is a scientific term to describe feeling of some troubling existence in throat. Coughing here helps to get ease from this tickling in throat
Can cough be treated herbally?
