Citrus Limon, popularly known as lemon, is one of the most widely used fruit all over the world.
Lemons are useful in making many delicious dishes such as pickled lemon, tasty lemonades, adding flavour to hard candies, soft drinks, iced tea and many mouth-watering dishes but apart from these, this extraordinary fruit is useful for a variety of other purposes.
Despite its sour taste, lemon can be used in a variety of internal as well as external problems. It is a fruit having marvelous medicinal properties and an action on almost all the body systems.
Lemon has a tremendous action on the skin ailments such as sunburned skin (apply diluted lemon juice on the affected area). It acts as an astringent over the skin and helps in drawing the tissues together. Lemon juice mixed with glycerin gives a smooth, shiny skin and helps in getting rid of blackheads.
Essential oils extracted from lemon have a cooling effect on the body and because of this reason lemonade mixed in a cup of water and sugar makes an excellent cure for reducing body temperature.
Lemon’s aromatherapy is useful in having calm and soothing effect; it helps in enhancing mood and relaxing temperament. Consuming a cup of lemon drink before going to bed helps in curing insomnia and reduces nervousness and palpitations.
Lemon helps acts as an antioxidant and reduces hyperactivity of the stomach and is even beneficial in liver diseases. It also helps relieve constipation if taken in warm water mixed with a little honey before breakfast.
Lemon juice mixed with a little of honey and olive oil helps in relieving cough. It is also beneficial in treating asthma and epistaxis (nosebleed) when taken in proper doses.
Apart from these, lemon is also known to have wonderful actions on the muskuloskeletal ailments (arthritis and gout), urinary conditions such as retention of urine and on intestinal worms. It has great antiseptic properties and used widely in insect bite cases.
Other uses of lemon juice include treating dandruff (application on hair before shampoo), remove ink spots from clothes (when mixed with detergent), removing oil stains (mixed with water for cleaning) and many others.
