What To Do In Ankle Pain?
Ankle is the joint in the foot that allows the foot to move away from the body and towards the body. Pain in the ankle mainly occurs when there is sprain (trauma) in the ligaments of the ankle.
Reasons for Ankle Pain
During ankle sprain the ankle turns inward causing the ligaments to break. This causes swelling and bruising and it becomes difficult for the ankle joint to hold and bear the body weight and thereby it causes pain.
There can be other reasons for the occurrence of ankle pain such as arthritis, gout or some infection also.
What To Do?
When you feel the pain in the ankle, take rest for some days and do not over-strain your ankle by either standing, running or jumping. If you have swelling then put some pillow below your foot and take rest and put a crape bandage also. Use of painkillers can also work.
After recovering from the condition, do some exercises for the ankle, as these prove beneficial. Do these regularly. Swimming is also very good as it moves all the muscles of the legs and feet.
Weight can also be the reason for ankle pain. So reducing weight is a must step. Always wear comfortable shoes and never wear high heels as it makes the condition worse.
Another exercise is to sit on the ground and stretch the feet. Rotate the foot anti-clockwise and then clockwise. It helps to reduce the swelling.
Various ankle supports are also present in the market. You can use them if you are prone to suffer from ankle pain.
Some home remedies can also be tried. Mix some vinegar with equal amount of water and heat the mixture. Dip a towel in it and wrap around the foot. Then do the same way but with the cold water and vinegar. Repeat it for three times in a day and see the results.
Cucumber is also good in absorbing the swelling. Place the cucumber slices over the ankle and wrap with a cloth or bandage.
If the pain does not subside even after trying the above said remedies, consult an orthopedic consultant.
