What to Do About Bloating?

Stress and wrong diet are top factors that cause bloating. Both result in poor functioning of the digestive system which develops gas, hence the burps and farts. Occasional bloating is normal but regular bloating is neither good for you nor for those around you.Foods and Habits to be Changed

Excess consumption of wheat and dairy products may cause water retention. Try to decrease their intake. Processed foods, foods containing saturated fats (trans fats), caffeine, excess salt, sugar and alcohol must be avoided.

Refined carbohydrates like white pasta, white pastry and white rice should be completely cut off from the diet. All these foods are heavy on the digestive system. The metabolism is greatly disturbed leading to putrefaction and fermentation. Aerated drinks must be avoided completely.

Many people simply swallow food no sooner it is inside the mouth. Without digestion using the amylase, the bacteria and yeast directly enter the digestive system causing production of gas. Food needs to be chewed properly before swallowing. Ice cold water will increase bloating.

Foods and Tips to Take

Sip warm water before and after your meals. Do not drink water during your meals. Drink probiotic preparations every day. Drink plenty of water to decrease water retention.

Celery and chicory are good choices because celery restores electrolyte balance (sodium and potassium) and chicory is a form of probiotic.

Eat food that are rich in fiber and water. Freshly cut cucumber, flax seeds, tomatoes, water melon, musk melon and brown rice are all great foods to prevent bloating.

Do not delay evening meals. By late hours the gastric juices necessary for digestion are unavailable. Eating food at odd hours will only add to the bulk on the system but also interfere with absorption of nutrients by the body.

Avoid eating while standing or walking. This disturbs the digestion. Close your mouth as you chew your foods. This will restrict entry of excess air inside the mouth. Entry on air from the mouth will increase production of gas.

Herbs that Help

Consume one quarter of aloe vera juice every day before the largest meals of the day i.e. either breakfast or lunch.

Eat small amount of jaggery after all your meals to aid in digestion. Herbal tea made from peppermint, ginger and fennel are good digestive aids.
