What Makes Coffee So Special
Presence of rich antioxidants and caffeine is what makes coffee one of the most popular drinks in the healthcare industry. There are many controversies related to this beverage. We try to find out the truth behind the conceptions.
Role of Antioxidants
The antioxidants in coffee have been extensively studies across the globe. According to a study conducted on 126000 participants in the Harvard University, it was found that those who drank 1 to 3 cups of coffee daily reduced their risk of type II diabetes by 50 percent. A study that supports role of coffee in reduced risk of skin cancer has been published in the journal of Investigative Dermatology.
The antioxidants are found exclusively in nature in many fruits and vegetables. Interestingly, the US department of Agriculture data supports that coffee ranks the highest in providing maximum amount of antioxidants in one serving when compared with single servings of other marketed beverages. Some of the beverages in competition were chocolate, cranberry juice, tea and milk.
Additionally, the antioxidants alone are able to help in prevention and treatment of many cardiovascular diseases and age related diseases. Those who roast their coffee beans at home, here is good news for them. Roasted coffee has higher number of antioxidants. Antioxidants have shown to reduce risk of depression and colon cancer.
Role of Caffeine
Coffee is one easy source to elevate mood and ward off sleep temporarily. The central nervous system stimulant action of coffee is due to caffeine. The chemical has an “evil†reputation. But if consumed in moderation, the nutrients have shown to help in boosting memory and give instant energy. One cup of coffee (contain about 85 to 120 mg of caffeine) is sufficient to keep you up for a couple of hours.
In July 2005, it was suggested in the Journal of the American Medical Association that caffeine has the potency to lower the risk on diabetes by reducing insulin sensitivity.
Too much of everything is bad. Therefore, try to consume in moderation to avoid coffee addiction. Consumption of white sugar along with coffee interferes with health benefits offered by the coffee. Instead, try to consume brown sugar.
