What Is Ringworm?

Ringworm is a viral skin infection, which can affect scalp, groin area, feet and skin on the body. As per the name it is not a worm.

Symptoms of Ringworm

There are many useful and harmful bacteria and fungi on the body. Ringworm occurs when these unsafe fungus catches the skin of the body and cause infection. An itchy, red and scaly patch is formed on the affected area. The patch is formed is in the shape of ring. If the infection occurs on the scalp or beard then there would be appearance of bald patches over the area. If the infection occurs on the nails then they become discolored, thick and even crumble.

Ringworm is contagious. It can spread from one to other. It can spread by direct skin-to-skin contact, even by using things like comb, sharing the same clothes or even towels. One can develop some fungal infections by the pet animals like dogs and cats too.

Diagnosis

The diagnosis of ringworm is very easy. It can be confirmed by seeing the infection even. This is easy because the infection is in the form of ring.

Ringworm Treatment

This is easy to heal as many anti-fungal ointments are present in the market that gives good results and self-care is also important. But if the infection is on nails or scalp then oral medication is also necessary. Keep the area dry and do not scratch.

There are various home remedies available for ringworm. Raw papaya is considered the best. Applying it directly on the infected area or in the form of paste both ways are beneficial. Some vegetable juices like carrot juice and spinach juice when mixed together and applied to the ringworm-affected area prove to be beneficial. Turmeric is also good for the treatment. Juice of raw turmeric should be applied and also mix equal quantity of turmeric and honey and eat it. This would also benefit you.

Have a well balanced diet and try avoiding caffeine. Drink plenty of water. When the ringworm goes away it leaves a mark. Applying coconut oil on it regularly removes the mark also.
