What Is Fatty Liver?

Liver is primarily responsible for metabolism of fats, carbohydrates and proteins inside the body. Fatty liver is a health disorder in which triglycerides start to accumulate inside the liver cells.

There are many factors that may lead to development of a fatty liver. If the conditions remain unchecked it can cause serious damage to the liver, even leading to development of hepatitis and cirrhosis.

Signs and Symptoms

There are no early symptoms and it is because of this reason that it goes unnoticed in initial stages. Later symptoms include continuous pain below the rib cage, dry mouth, fever, swollen feet and legs, forgetfulness and frequent memory lapse. These may also include appetite loss and unexplained weight loss.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis is done by using techniques like CAT scan, liver biopsy and MRI. Blood samples of the person may be taken to determine the underlying cause of fatty liver. Blood test is also important in determining development of liver cirrhosis, if any.

Causes of fatty liver

Fatty liver is of types. The one that is caused due to alcohol is called alcoholic fatty liver. The other one is caused by other factors and is called non-alcoholic fatty liver or non-alcoholic steatohepatitis. Drugs taken for treating breast cancer are also found to cause fatty liver as a side effect.

Other factors include obesity, pregnancy and leading a passive lifestyle. With a passive lifestyle the glucose gradually accumulates in the liver. This causes increased gluconeogenesis (conversion of glucose into fat) and thus the fat produced is stored in the liver.

Treatment

Fatty liver caused due to alcohol is handled by complete cutting down of alcohol and by maintaining a healthy lifestyle. This should include eating balanced meals. Supplementation of vitamins and minerals are also given to help liver resume normal functioning.
