What Is Balanitis

Balanitis is the term used to describe irritation and inflammation of the tip of the penis (glans penis). This may be caused due to some bacterial, yeast or fungal infection, condom irritation, use of untidy clothing, etc. Many a times the cause is unknown. STD may also cause balanitis.

The earlier it is recognized the better it would be. For this, uncover the head of the penis while taking a shower. Do this gently. If you experience any discomfit consult the doctor immediately.

Signs and Symptoms

There are no early symptoms of this infection. The symptoms develop after it has developed, by a week. Unexplainable discharge from penis, itch, and appearance of penis tip as red are common signs and symptoms of balanitis.

Treatment

Antibiotic and antifungal creams are the most commonly used treatment. Peroxide powder and use of asphenamine is very useful. The creams must be applied regularly for 10 days. Many over-the-counter preparations are available.

Care and Prevention

The infection can be prevented by maintaining penile hygiene habits. The penis should be washed everyday with soap and water. Clean cloths must be worn. Choice of condom must be made by keeping in mind the quality and right size. Regular use of wrong condom causes damage and may aggravate balanitis symptoms.

Once one has developed balanitis, make sure not to wash penis head with soap and water. It will only cause irritation. Use a glycerin based cream to clean the area. Try to wash the area with lukewarm water. During maturation make sure that left over urine does not keep the penis wet. Wipe it dry.

Avoid making sexual intercourse. If that is unavoidable then immediately wash the penis and the foreskin after the intercourse. Let the penis dry in air for few minutes.  This will ensure that there is no more moisture present.

If the inflammation and the infection are left untreated it can seriously damage the sensitive tissues. The opening of the penis may become scarred and narrow. Hence, the uncovering of the penis will be very painful. Phimosis and paraphimosis may develop.

There are four types of balanitis. These are Candidal, Anaerobic, Chlamydial¸ Mycoplasma and Trichomonal.
