What Is ADHD?
ADHD or the attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (AD/HD) is the most commonly diagnosed psychiatric disorder in children. The behavior of an ADHD patient may seem troublesome but if left untreated it can seriously cause unrest in their normal lifestyle.
Signs and Symptoms
It has been observed that boys and girls have different signs and symptoms because of ADHD. Boys will seem less communicative with teachers and parents. Therefore it will become difficult to understand what is going on in their minds. Girls will be more inattentive and often can be seen “lost†in daydreaming. Boys will be more hyperactive than girls. But girls will be very unattached and quite.
Common symptoms include frequently fidgeting, talking excessively when spoken to, and interrupting inappropriately between the conversions of group just to seek attention, forgetfulness and general anxiety. They always seem anxious and may perform unnecessary physical activities like climbing too many stairs unnecessarily.
Treatment
Stimulants are most commonly used to treat ADHD. Stimulants include drugs based on chemicals such as methylphenidate and dextroamphetamine. Research shows that stimulates are most effective in treating ADHD. It has been observed that in any given ADHD patient population, 90 per cent of children responded to at least one type of stimulants.
Use of stimulants to treat ADHD varies from person to person. Also, it is a possibility that the side effects experienced due to one stimulant in one person may have positive effect on other person. The dose needs to be increased only gradually. Even if you know the drug prescription do not give it to your child without consultation with a specialist.
Social skills of the children suffering from ADHD must be polished since it will help them come out of ADHD faster. Preschool children have show a better response to stimulants.
The medication is most effective in teenagers. The only trouble is consumption of multiple doses which may be difficult for the teenager to remember.
Possible Side Effects
Different drugs under stimulants show different side effects. According to one research, consumption of comorbid causes side effects like irritability, problems with sleep and disturbed appetite.
ADHD is a psychiatric disorder. The family must be very supportive and try to understand the state of mind of the patient rather than arguing with them.
