Ways To Control Psoriasis

May 26, 2009

Psoriasis is an inherited autosomal disease, which is often found in more than one member of a family. Incidence is equal in both men and women. The exact cause for its occurrence is unknown.

In psoriasis, the time taken for epidermal cell transfer from inner layer of skin to the outer surface reduces to 3-4 days from the normal 30-day cycle. This altered phenomenon leads to the formation of immature epidermal cells, which ultimately shed as scales.

The lesions of psoriasis may be present on any body part but elbows, knees, lower back and scalp are mostly involved sites. Some patients have severe itching over the lesions. The condition improves in summers and gets worse in winters.

Treatment for psoriasis depends upon the severity of the lesions. Simple maintenance can control the condition most of the times. In severe cases, treatment aims at speeding the clearance of the lesions and minimizing the side effects.

Washing the affected area with mild soap or cleanser, which do not cause irritation and drying of the skin is useful. Warm water also helps in loosening the scales. Skin should be patted dry in a gentle manner and local medications should be applied immediately after drying.

Moisturizing the skin works wonders for psoriatic skin. Lubrication of the skin is an essential treatment tool as it helps reduce cracking of the skin and prevents itching and further inflammation.

Clothing should be of cotton material only. Synthetic clothes must not be used at all as these can flare up the condition badly. Humidifying the air at home is also beneficial.

Any skin injury or irritation must be avoided as far as possible. Scratching the skin or even slight sunburn can aggravate the symptoms. Development of psoriasis may even start off from the minor burn or injury.

Other measures to manage psoriasis are eating balanced diet, drinking plenty of water and relaxing the mind.
