Vitamins for a Healthy Life

Remember when we were young, our parents used to tell us to eat fresh fruits, vegetables, pulses and other items that we always disliked. We preferred to have burgers and pizzas as taste was more important for us than nutritional values. We always thought that our parents are devils as they never allow us to have those foods that we love to have. But let me tell you, parents are not devils. They know the importance of vitamins and want a healthy life for their children and hence they forced us to eat foods that were good source of vitamins.

To put it in simple terms, a vitamin is a nutrient that is required by every living organism. Vitamins have diverse functions and help in the smooth functioning of the human body. Vitamin D functions as hormones while Vitamin E acts as an antioxidant. Vitamins also ensure proper functioning of our organs by bounding to enzymes and carrying out cell operations.

In humans, vitamins are classified as either fat soluble or water soluble. As the names suggests, fat soluble vitamins get absorbed in the body via lipids and water soluble vitamins get absorbed in the body via water. Amongst the 13 vitamins present in humans, 4 are fat soluble (A, D, E and K) while 9 are water soluble (B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B7, B9, B12, and C).

With so many vitamins and their respective operations, it is necessary to have a steady intake of all types of vitamins for a healthy well being. There are artificial vitamin pills available in the market which can be consumed. But it is better to consume fresh fruits and vegetables as they not only deliver vitamins but also other important nutrients like minerals, roughage, proteins, etc. It goes without saying that consuming natural resources is better than artificial resources for a healthy and joyful life.
