Vitamin E Facts

Vitamin E, more popularly known as the beauty vitamin, provides several health benefits. It must be supplemented along with zinc, preferably. There is a certain upper limit that should not be exceeded for the vitamin E intake. Both the deficiency and the excess consumption can be life hazardous to health.

How Much to Take

Adult females should consume a daily dose of 800IU, which is more than that needed by the lactating mothers who are allowed 400IU for daily consumption. Adult males should also consume 800IU. For children, the amount must not exceed 20 IU. Infants obtain their share of vitamin E through breast milk. Under any circumstances, the daily dose of vitamin E should not exceed 1200 IU when taking over-the counter drugs.

People suffering from diabetes, hyperthyroidism and high blood pressure must be careful not are take vitamin E in excess.

Natural Sources

Vitamin E is present in surplus amount in nature in the form of foods. Almonds, strawberries, papaya, peach, coco, mango, peanuts, walnuts carry vitamin E is huge quantities. Vegetarian sources of tocopherol include broccoli, spinach, turnips, tomatoes, carrots, dandelion greens, pumpkin, sweet potato and beet greens.

Non vegetarian sources include eggs and fish. Oils that are rich source of vitamin E include sesame seed oil, flax seed oil, soybean oil and extra virgin olive oil.

Health Benefits

Vitamin E acts as a powerful antioxidant and provides protection against several diseases like dementia, epilepsy, muscle degeneration, osteoporosis, yellow nail syndrome, etc. It builds up immunity to fight cancer.

Other health benefits include prevention and treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, premenstrual syndrome, fibrosis, bronchitis, atherosclerosis, diabetes, cold sores and anemia.

Vitamin E can alone fight all signs of skin aging. This beauty vitamin can be used in several face packs to reduce wrinkles and tighten the skin. For this, one may mix contents of one vitamin E capsule in any regular home made paste for skin care. Regular use of skin care products rich in vitamin E provide prevention and takes care of all minor skin related problems.

There are certain medications that prevent absorbance of vitamin E inside the body. These include drugs given to reduce blood cholesterol and anticonvulsants.
