Understanding Dry Nose

Having a dry nose is equally uncomfortable as having a running nose. Let us try to understand what causes a dry nose and how it should be treated.

Causes of dry nose

Some medicinal preparations may cause dry nose. These include antihistamines, nasal sprays and bronchodilators. Atropine causes dry nose. Therefore, all those medicines which contain atropine may cause dry nose.

Also, if one has had any history of dry nose then avoid taking any over-the-counter drug or herbal preparations without prescription. Always consult your physician before taking any new medicine.

Medical conditions such as Sjoren`s syndrome and keratoconjuctivitis sicca cause dry nose. Hot and dry weather is also responsible for dry nose.

Things to Remember

Keep your body well hydrated from inside. Drink lots of water and juices but avoid aerated drinks. If your medication is causing you excessive belching, ask your doctor to decrease your dosage. Do not use Vaseline to moisturize your nostrils as it may cause pneumonia if it reaches the lungs. Remain in a humidified area. Cover up your nose when exposed to dry and hot atmosphere.

Those suffering from a dry nose must avoid extreme changes of weather. Being in a very cold area or very hot area will not be suitable. Such person much always remains in clean and warm environment.

Herbal remedies for dry nose

Scab formation is common with dry nose. It can be clarified with oil. Inhaling a few drops of sesame seed oil mixed with water helps in clearing the nose and providing hydration. Crust formation must be avoided at all costs.

Preparation of “sheera” is easy and it clears the trouble of dry nose completely. For this take 5 almonds, one tbsp of gram flour, 1 tea spoon of ghee and a cup of milk. Roast gram flour in ghee until it becomes a little dark in shade. Put almonds and roast them a little then pour in the milk. Simmer it for 3 minute so that it becomes a little thick.

Drink this at bed time and do not get out of bed or drink water for at least 2 hours after its consumption. Use of saline water spray is helpful in moisturizing the nasal passage.
