Treating Ingrown Hair
June 29, 2009
Ingrown hair is a problem in which the hair curls on its own and turns inward and grows into the skin. This condition can occur in any person and appears mostly on the areas where the skin is waxed or shaved.
It occurs due to lack of moisture in that area, improper shaving, waxing or other methods to remove hair. Some people may have the tendency to have curved hair. Some areas get affected due to friction developed by the cloth and skin especially the bikini region, under arms and thighs.
A blister forms in the region where ingrown hair occurs and causes inflammation, itching and pain. A hard scar tissue appears on the skin in the affected area.
You can prevent the problem of ingrown hair by exfoliating the area of the skin. Use a sponge to do it but if your skin is very sensitive do not do it, as you can get hurt. Instead use baking soda mixed with liquid soap and spread it over the body and then wash off.
Remember to scrub the area before shaving so that the hair stands and can be easily shaved. Also, never shave immediately after the bath. Change the blades of the razor frequently as old blades can produce bacteria in them thereby causing infection.
Using cold mixture of cucumber and milk can reduce the itching caused by ingrown hair. Take a cloth and soak in the mixture and apply to the affected area for few minutes and then wash off. By this you can reduce the redness and itching to a great extent.
Salt can also be used to treat ingrown hair. For the body, soak some Epsom salt in water and apply on the area or for better results apply it directly to the affected area without mixing it in water. Sugar scrubs can be used as they exfoliate the skin, which is required for treating ingrown hair.
Aloe vera gel when applied to the ingrown hair for twice a day for 2-3 days can do wonders.
Aspirin is said to be present in all the medicines used for ingrown hair treatment. So crush 2-3 tablets of aspirin, mix with 1 teaspoon of water and apply on the ingrown hair, let it dry and then wash off. It also exfoliates the skin.
