Hiccups are more of an embarrassment in public than just a discomfort. It is observed that someone experiences hiccups if he or she is being remembered by someone. Biologically, hiccups are result of rapid contraction of the diaphragm in the form of jerks.
Smoking, stress, deep thinking, excitement, an upset stomach or irritation in throat may lead to hiccups. Any trick that may let the diaphragm come back to its natural rhythm helps in getting relief from the hiccups. Here are some effective remedies.
Squeeze one lemon into a glass of water and drink it by taking large sips. Take some sugar and let it dissolve as syrup slowly into the mouth. Do not chew it but suck it. You may add some baking soda to a glass of fresh water and sip it slowly to get relief from hiccups.
Holding your breath for a few seconds and then exhale forcefully. Also, rapidly inhaling and exhaling will help the diaphragm to come back to its original rhythm. One common remedy is to drink water. An extension to this remedy is that you may close your ears while someone helps you drink the water from the glass. By doing this, you will be able to create a kind of pressure in the ENT area to help diaphragm relax.
Cardamom water, prepared by boiling some of it in a glass of water, is an effective remedy for hiccups. It can be sipped slowly to get relief. Eating popcorn and ice-cream also seems to help many.
Persimmon flowers are an effective remedy for hiccups provided it is boiled in water, sieved and then consumed as a drink. One unexplained remedy is to get yourself occupied with some work or some physical action so as to take your mind off the hiccups. The remedy does work wonderfully in case of people who seldom experience hiccups.
In order to prevent hiccups once must consume food in small bits. Also, the food must be chewed well and not gulped down. This helps to prevent building up of unwanted pressure inside the system.
