Testosterone Replacement Therapy

The testosterone replacement therapy is given to supplement for decreased levels of testosterone in men. Need for the therapy is more common in elderly men. Hormonal imbalance and consumption of medications are common factors that disturb the testosterone levels in body.

Testosterone is responsible for proper functioning of the reproductive system in men. It is also responsible for hair growth on body and plays important role in maintaining physically features in men.

Signs and symptoms of low levels of testosterone are decreased sexual activity, decreased libido, visible changes in moods, and increase in body weight, especially around the belly. The strength of the muscles may decrease and partially memory loss may also be experienced.

Production of sperms (spermatogenesis) is dependent on presence of testosterone. When testosterone is given from outside (in the form of this replacement therapy), the testes stop production of the hormones inside the body and thus sperm production is disturbed. Make sure you are not trying to start a family if you will be taking this treatment.

Problems in micturation may occur due to increase in size of the prostate. Also, there is an increased risk for development of cancerous cells in prostate.

Fluid retention may occur within a few months of taking the therapy. Fluid retention leads to swelling in legs and ankles, congestive heart failure (CHF) and hypertension. Even if the condition does not lead to some health problem, yet it causes a significant amount of discomfort in body movement.

Here are certain abnormabilities that may occur due to the therapy. The RBC (red blood cells) count may increase significantly. Increase in PSA may also occur. Infertility due to this treatment is more common in younger men than older men. Dangerous changes can occur in cholesterol level.
