Terrific Turmeric

Turmeric is as common as salt in Indian kitchens.  The herb is obtained from the rhizomes of the plant. It is an edible spice and both internal as well as external benefits.

To start with, turmeric is the goddess of herbs when it comes to beautification of skin. Application of turmeric with some sesame seed oil and lemon juice on skin makes it fairer in complexion.

The herb when given in warm milk is known traditionally to speed up recovery from any form of wounds. The antibacterial and antiseptic properties of turmeric help heal these cuts and burns very well. It boosts immunity of body with regular consumption.  It is also added in traditional “pinni ” preparation for strengthening of organ systems in body.

Turmeric is helpful in preventing leukemia in children. Researches have found turmeric to improve condition of multiple sclerosis in mice.  Another study done on mice revealed ability of turmeric to help in treatment of breast cancer. It also showed its ability to prevent spreading of the breast cancer to lungs in mice. Melanoma cells cause self destruction. Turmeric has shown to prevent formation of melanoma cells and hence the suicidal condition.

Turmeric has been found to be incredibly helpful in treatment of pancreatic cancer. It also stops the growth of tumor vessels. This cuts multiplication of the tumor due to reduced blood supply. Turmeric has shown to improve functioning of liver and help it get detoxified. Turmeric is a COX2 inhibitor. It selectively acts to help get rid of pain. By being a COX 2 inhibitor it protects the gastric area to be under ulcer threat.

Turmeric works well with conditions of arthritis and gout. But there are some conditions where turmeric must not be given.  It is contradicted to people suffering form gall stones and bile obstruction. Since turmeric is a uterine stimulant, it should be given to pregnant women only after consultation with physician.
