Tampons

Tampons are disposable mass made of rayon or cotton or both, and are used primarily to absorb menstrual flow. They are placed in the vagina with the help of an applicator. Unlike sanitary napkins, placing tampons will require some practice. This is how it is done.

Using Tampons

Using tampon is very convenient once one gets used to it. Use a tampon of small size for the very first time. Also, it would be better that you insert the tampon into the vagina on the day of heavy menstrual flow. This will help the mass to slide into the cavity easily. Also, the tampon must only be used once the menstrual flow starts.

To insert the tampon, be in a comfortable position. Some women prefer to stand some just sit down. Using the applicator, insert the tampon inside the vagina. Make sure that the thread faces away from the body. Use those fingers to insert the tampon with which you write.

Open the labia and gently place it at the opening end of the vagina. Gently push it into the cavity and stop pushing once the outer tube of the tampon is completely inside. The tampon must cover the inside completely, leaving the thread outside. Using your middle finger and your thumb you can remove the applicator.

Ideally, the tampon must be changed after every 4 to 5 hours. If left for more time it may cause bacterial infection leading to toxic shock syndrome.

It can be removed by pulling the thread outwards. If the tampon fits well you must not feel it at all. In case you are able to feel the tampon then the placement is not correct. One must remove it and try again with a new tampon.

Tips

Tampons can be used by swimmers during menstrual days. But it is not advisable to remain in the pool for a longer time while wearing them. Use a fresh tampon just before you are about to enter the pool.

Make sure that you use one of proper size. Remove them after swimming to avoid embarrassment.

One may use little lubricant to insert it. But do consult gynecologist about which lubricant to use.

Tampons must not be worn in case of very little bleeding. These are suitable only in case of heavy menstrual flow.
