Taking Care Of Emphysema

Emphysema is usually accompanied by chronic bronchitis and together they are known as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Emphysema does not show many early symptoms.

It develops over the years in a very silent manner. It is a degenerative disease in which the alveoli of the lungs lose their elasticity and it becomes difficult to breathe properly. Unable to stretch, the damaged tissues trap the oxygen but are unable to exhale the air.

There is no cure for emphysema but there are certain things one can take care to prevent or ease the symptoms.

To start with, be in healthy surroundings as much as you can. Avoid suffocated areas, unhygienic paces and places with excess humidity and less air circulation.

Stop smoking and avoid being a passive smoker. Smoking contributes in constricting the alveoli and hence worsening the symptoms. With passive smokers, the symptoms of emphysema may appear some 10 years later.

Exercising is a good way to improve circulation of blood in the body. It even helps in better exchange of oxygen. Walking and using weights are especially good. All those exercises that tone your muscles will be beneficial.

Do breathing exercises regularly. Practice uniform breathing and breathing from your diaphragm. Breathing from your diaphragm is very easy. Observe a baby. Their tummy goes up and down while breathing. Do the same. The more you strengthen your breathing muscles the better. Give these exercises at least 30 minutes every day.

Eat small meals but eat frequently. During emphysema, the enlarged lungs put pressure on the abdomen thus leaving little space for the stomach to expand. Also, opt for protein meals than a meal in carbohydrates. This will ensure more calories without adding bulk onto the stomach.

Supplementation with vitamin C (about 500 mg) and vitamin E (about 700 mg) must be taken every day.

Try to have a relaxed lifestyle. One does not need to isolate oneself socially. Instead, try to remain in neat surroundings. Most patients of emphysema have reported that sitting a little upwards helps them in sleeping better.

Avoid using deodorants, sprays etc. The chemicals may aggravate emphysema symptoms. Many over-the-counter inhalers are available but these must be taken after consultation with the doctor.
