Sutton`s Disease: Cause and Prevention

Canker sores or aphthous ulcer are a type of oral ulcers which occur due to rupture of mucous membrane in the mouth. These sores cause much pain and occur mainly on upper throat area. These are known as Sutton`s disease.

Cause

Physical stresses to the mouth caused by a rough toothbrush, sharp and hard foods like toast and accidental biting of the inside of the mouth are the most common reasons of canker sores.

Deficiency of iron, vitamin B12 and folic acid also cause canker sores. Sudden weight loss, any form of food allergy, sensitivity to toothpaste containing sodium lauryl sulphate and hormonal changes may lead to painful sores. Other factors that cause canker sores include celiac disease, menstruation related problems, auto-immune reactions, wearing dental braces and chemotherapy.

There are three types of canker sores- minor, deep and herpetiformis.

Preventing Canker Sores

Do not brush your teeth very aggressively. This damages sensitive tissues and gums inside the mouth and causes damage to the mucous membrane.

If you are wearing braces or dentures make sure your dentist has placed them properly. If they are causing any abrasion to your mouth inform your dentist immediately. The metal used often causes discomfort.

Some people have a habit of biting inside of their mouth. Mouthgaurds can be worn to prevent damage caused by biting.

Studies report that stress management is helpful in preventing canker sores.  In excess stress, the body releases cytokines and other chemicals which are harmful for body. Check if your toothpaste contains sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS). Discard it immediately if it does contain SLS and purchase either a herbal toothpaste or the one which is SLS-free.

Yogurt contains Lactobacillus acidophilus. This bacterium is helpful in healing canker sores. It has been found that eating 8 ounce of yogurt every day helps in relieving pain and healing of the ulcer.

Consumption of citrus fruits in excess may cause canker sores. Although citrus fruits are rich source of vitamin C which boosts the body immunity, citrus fruits aggravate symptoms of sores. Avoid eating them.

With these precautions, the sores generally heal within 2 weeks of time without any medication.
