Stroke: An Emergency
Stroke is caused due to the improper function of the brain, which is due to the death of brain cells caused due to the lack of oxygen. Stroke is said to be third leading cause of deaths.
Blockage in the artery of the brain due to deposition of calcium or cholesterol can stop the flow of blood to the brain. This deposition is called clotting of blood. Due to this, the flow of blood, glucose and oxygen to the brain is not sufficient.
There are various factors that can causes for stroke including hypertension, smoking, diabetes, high alcohol intake, family history, high cholesterol or trauma.
Most common symptoms of stroke are weakness and paralysis of one side of the body in which one side of body (leg and arm) do not work. It can even affect the facial muscles that can result in speech problem also. Numbness is the other common problem in stroke. One may even have difficulty in breathing or may become unconscious.
As soon as a person feels to have some similar symptoms, take him to an emergency department in the hospital. Make the person lie straight on the floor till the time ambulance arrives. The diagnosis can be confirmed after certain tests.
Aspirin plays an important role in preventing stroke. So, as soon as any body is getting any symptom, take aspirin as it makes the blood thinner. But the second tablet should only be taken after consulting the doctor.
Some people can have a symptom in which a part of body is felt like not working for sometime and the symptom goes of by itself. Do not neglect this alerting symptom.
Symptoms experienced by women may be different from men. Women generally experience loss of consciousness, they become confused and disoriented. Because of such difference in symptoms, the treatment in case of women usually gets delayed.
