Something About Dentures

September 16, 2009

Dentures or the “false teeth” come in a great variety. Plus, there is an option for removable dentures and those dentures which can be fitted into the bone and appear real.

Many people have reported that it takes some time in getting used the dentures. But there are certain things that one must know about them.

Most of the people depend on their dentist for keeping the dentures clear. This is not how it should be done. Many dentists suggest that the dentures must be cleaned twice every day, just as one who maintains the hygiene with the real teeth.

It is important to keep the gums clean and healthy. Use a soft brush with a tongue cleaner to clean your mouth. Even if your have removed your teeth you need to keep your gums clean. This is because bacteria not just grow on teeth but also in gums. Babies do not have teeth yet they are born with plaque in their mouth.

A simple remedy is to wash mouth with a solution of salt in warm water every day. Give your gums a rest once in a while. Take out your dentures and open your mouth wide by stretching muscles of the jaws. Also, one may clean the dentures better by taking them out.

People wearing denture often complaint about excess production of saliva right after the implant. Lozenges may be helpful. You may suck onto them. Do not try using fennel seeds or pieces of cloves or mulethi. They may stick to the gums.

Do not use toothpicks. The thing with dentures is that one loses sense to what is one biting. You may stick the edges of the toothpick and damage the denture.

Denture adhesive will help the false teeth to establish themselves well. These are easily available in the form of over-the-counter drugs. A soft paste can be prepared and applied. The paste will create a vacuum between the denture and the gums thus binding them together.

Use your thumb and index finger to massage your gums in circular motion. Practice talking while wearing new dentures. You may read out some text, practice vowels or consonants.
