Sleeping Benefits
Sleep is an opportunity given by nature to let our body and mind relax and heal. By one’s teenage, one is already slept nearly five years of their life. Amount of sleep a person needs, depends upon the age and health condition of the person.
A person whose biological age is much younger than the actual age would also require a particular hours of sleep depending on their his/her biological age. There are two different types of sleep.
One is Non-rapid eye movement or NREM and the other is Rapid eye movement REM. Dreams are seen in REM types of sleep and eye movement can be observed. This shows that the person is dreaming.
At least two hours of our sleep is spent in dreaming. NREM lasts for hardly 5 minutes. But if we are lucky, we may have an extended phase. During this phase, a person is in deep sleep. They are difficult to wake up.
Nevertheless, the effect of both these sleeping stages has different effect on the body. Studies tell us that good sleeping habits actually boost the immune system of our body.
It provides natural healing and de-stresses the entire muscles of body and mind alike. All neurons which control functions such as digestion and breathing repair themselves during this phase. Some of the major hormones function at pea during sleep. For example, the growth hormones function during sleep. All in all, sleep is essential for rejuvenation, growth and wellness.
In case of insufficient sleep you observe fatigued eyes, restlessness, anxiety, irritation and clumsiness. You may not be able to get up easily in morning. Here is who should sleep how much. Teenagers need average 9 hours of sleep everyday.
Where adults need 8 hours of sleep, elderly people need 7 to 8 hours with short spans o sleep. Pregnant women require few extra hours of sleep whereas infants require 16 hours of sleep daily.
