Sleep Apnea is Life Threatening
Sleeping disorders are picking up due to disrupted sleeping cycles. Here is an interesting sleeping disorder to know about. It is called sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is a disorder in which the person suffers from interrupted breathing during the sleep.
It is interesting to note here that the person is usually unable about his problem. There may be episodes when the person struggles hard during the sleep for normal breathing still remain unaware about this life-threatening condition.
The earlier it is diagnosed the better is will be. The sleeping partner will be the first one to notice it. There are some characteristic signs and symptoms for sleeping apnea. To start with, loud snoring is one. Many patients have reported to wake up suddenly and in all sweat. They have reported to wake up startled. When there is obvious break in breathing there occurs complete silence during sleeping. This is the phase when the person is not at all. This is called apnea.
Patients with sleeping apnea have reported problem of choking due to attempt of inhaling air. Since the sleep in disturbed due to dramatic episodes, the person is unable to have a good night sleep. The person is tired and tends to cover up for the sleep during day time.
There are two types of apnea. One is Obstructive sleep apnea and other is Central sleep apnea. Obstructive sleep apnea or OSA is the more common type of apnea. It is related to respiratory trouble since the breathing is interrupted from nose to mouth.
Whereas, the Central sleep apnea or CSA is connected to the nervous system. It is less common and often is consequent of injury in head or a severe stroke.
Sleeping apnea is a life threatening problem if left untreated. Obese people have a greater risk for developing of sleep apnea. Having regular hours of sleep, cutting down on alcohol and smoking is beneficial as self treatment for sleep apnea.
