Sex During Pregnancy: Safe?

Sex during pregnancy is safe enough if you and your partner are comfortable and enjoy it. The size of the belly may come in between to have intercourse in the same manner as before. But with a little innovation the couple can enjoy safe sex during pregnancy and that also includes having an orgasm.

Preferred Positions

The depth of penetration can be another issue for expecting mothers. By being on the top the women can control the depth of the penetration and also maintain the speed as per her comfort. This position is safe during the entire pregnancy.

Being on hands and knees is another method to avoid direct penetration of the penis. Some women may find this position difficult during last weeks of the pregnancy. It is all about if the woman is comfortable to hold her belly above the bed during the intercourse.

An easy way to have intercourse during pregnancy is by standing while the man penetrates his penis in you through your thighs. Although the penetration is not deep, many women have reported to experience this position as a very relaxing one. This position is known as “Spooning”.

Side wise lying is a safe position during pregnancy but it is not encouraged much. This is because the couple gets tired easily during this method.

When is Sex not Safe?

Sex during pregnancy is not safe if your partner is carrying any type of sexually transmitted diseases like genital warts, chlamydia, HIV or herpes. The disease can get easily transferred to your baby. Also, during oral sex, the man must not blow air into the vagina.

If some critical complications are there in the pregnancy it is better to avoid intercourse completely. These complications may include a history of miscarriages, multiple fetuses, a weak cervix such that it may dilate prematurely, any leakage from the amniotic fluid, vaginal bleeding, vaginal cramps and unexpected discharge from the vagina.

In case of pre-term labor the women is advised not to have intercourse. A pre-term labor means when the baby is expected to be delivered before 37 weeks. If the placenta is placed so low that it covers the cervix, the condition is called placenta previa. Intercourse must be avoided in this condition because the penetration may harm the fetus.
