Red Eye: Causes and Prevention
Blood red eyes are caused when the nerves in the white portion of the eye become enlarged and dilated. The condition is usually painless.
Causes of Red Eye
Redness in the eyes can be due to various reasons. It is necessary to know the cause of the red eye.
Conjunctivitis is the infection in the protective layer of the eye that is present in front of the eye. It causes red eye. It is caused by infection due to bacteria, viruses and any other toxic substance.
Dry eye is another situation that causes red eye. Tears are good for the eyes as they lubricate the eyes. But when they are not present in their normal quantity due to certain reasons they make the eyes inflamed and blood vessels become dilated which increase the redness in the eye.
Uveitis is the inflammation in the eye uvea, which makes the eye red. Eye becomes sensitive to light, vision becomes blurred and pain is also there in the eye. It is a very dangerous condition, which can lead to several complications.
Blepharitis is an infection of the eyelashes caused by bacteria causes itching and makes the lashes sticky too.
When any infection occurs in cornea then the surrounding blood vessels dilate and cause redness. Sometimes any injury caused to the eye can also makes it red. Dry air and more exposure to sunlight can also cause red eye. If one has cold in excess then also eyes become red.
Prevention
It is easy to prevent your eyes from any infection. Always wash your eyes whenever your return home from outside. Do not touch your eyes with dirty hands. Never use somebody’s towel especially on face and eyes.
Soothing eye drops are present in the market, use them to fresh your eyes. Putting a cucumber slice over the eyes relaxes them and prevents any infection. Have diet rich in Vitamin A, which is very good for eyes and eating green leafy vegetables is also beneficial.
