Problems Possible During Pregnancy
Problems during pregnancy are characteristic to the trimesters. Read below to know what to expect during the nine months. Before we talk about what may happen during the trimesters there are certain warning symptoms to be aware of during pregnancy.
Breathlessness, while at rest, may suggest anemia, pulmonary embolus or cardiovascular disease. Bleeding and abdominal cramps may suggest pre-mature labor, ectopic pregnancy or miscarriage.
During First Semester
Pregnant women commonly experience nausea. Severe nausea may suggest multiple pregnancies. The women may become dehydrated due to excess vomiting. This may require intravenous rehydration treatment.
The fetus is at a greater risk of infection during the early stage, most common being Rubella virus infection. Fetus is at a risk of termination due to excess use of antibiotics, smoking or alcohol consumption. It is observed that facial features of the fetus, of those women who have been binge drinking, appear abnormal.
Occurrence of ectopic pregnancy is rare but it becomes clear within this period. It is fertilization of the egg outside the womb. The fetus grows for few weeks then it starts rupturing the surrounding tissues to make space for the growing baby.
Symptoms of an ectopic pregnancy include constant pain in lower right and left side of the abdomen. Pain in the lower central abdomen region suggests miscarriage. Early internal examination is necessary to check for such complications. Once the surrounding tissues are ruptured it may lead to vaginal hemorrhage and severe pain in the abdomen.
During Second Trimester
Fetal abnormabilities and placenta praevia are main complications possible during this period. Ultra sound tests check for abnormabilities of kidney, heart, brain, etc. Most of the abnormabilities can be treated by fetal surgeries.
Placental praevia is the condition in which the placenta covers the cervix because of its placement below the womb rather than being at its side. This hinders the normal delivery.
In case this condition goes undetected during this phase then excess bleeding may occur in later stage of pregnancy, increasing the complication.
During Third Trimester
Anemia, pre-eclampsia (high blood pressure), digestion problems and premature delivery are most common complications in this period.
Anemia can occur in well-nourished women too. This is because of increase in blood volume and need of more iron to produce milk for the baby. Pre-eclampsia is characterized by swollen feet and hands.
