Preventing Discolouration Of Teeth
June 25, 2009
Discolouration of the teeth can occur due to a number of pathological reasons. However, some natural processes like physiological aging can also contribute to the discoloured appearance of teeth.
Some accidents may cause the death of the nerves, which supply the teeth and ultimately cause the discolouration of teeth. The blood vessels may also get ruptured inside the tooth following some trauma; this can cause bleeding leading to accumulation of blood inside the tooth thereby causing the tooth to change its colour.
Discolouration of teeth is very commonly seen in the people who smoke, chew tobacco and drink large quantities of coffee, tea or cold drinks.
Smoking affects the tooth colour in the worst manner. This habit reduces the production of saliva in the mouth, which is very important to clean the inner lining of the oral cavity. When its quantity gets reduced, the teeth and gums become sensitive and thus diseases related to them occur.
Whenever your smoke or take tea or coffee, remember to chew a sugarless chewing gum so as to produce saliva, which would wash away the dark liquid and prevent it from sticking on your teeth. Also rinse your mouth with water every time you smoke.
The way you brush your teeth is also very important. Never be in a hurry when you brush your teeth, do it slowly and in a proper manner otherwise brushing vigorously can affect your gums and teeth badly.
There are some home remedies as well to help in maintaining the natural colour of the teeth. You can mix bicarbonate of soda in your toothpaste, which acts as a natural tooth whitener. White vinegar and apple cedar can also be used for the same.
Children should be taught and warned against all the tooth problems and encouraged to brush the teeth at least twice a day and floss them atleast once.
Antibiotic tetracycline should not be taken during pregnancy and also not given to children as it can also cause discolouration of the teeth.
So, the first thing you have to do is to minimize the cigarette intake along with proper brushing and flossing of the teeth. Also visit your dentist regularly for the check-up. These simple steps can prevent the discolouration of your teeth and give you a whitening smile!
