Phlebitis: Types and Prevention
Phlebitis is the term given to inflammation in the veins. This inflammation further develops into a clot.
Types
It can be of two types. Superficial phlebitis is one in which only the veins on the surface of the skin get affected. This goes off easily with some precautions. Mainly bed ridden patients and pregnant women may develop this. Varicose veins patients generally develop this phlebitis. Swelling and red line occur till the extent of the affected vein and also cause pain.
There may be itching and swelling in the area. Fever is also caused in some cases. It is mainly formed in the legs and arms. It can be resoled by slightly elevating the legs. The problem gets worse by lowering the leg.
When deeper veins are affected a form a clot it is termed as thromobphlebitis. This is life threatening and involves the blood vessels. This is because the clot breaks and passes through venous system to the lungs. If the largest pulmonary vein gets blocked, it can result in death also. In this the entire limb is affected not only a particular area. But some people show no symptoms.
Prevention
Prevention is better than cure. So never sit in a particular position for long. Walking is good exercise, so go for walk regularly. This would increase the blood flow and no clots would be formed. Doing bed rest for long is also bad as this can worsen the condition. If the pain is severe, take a pain killer.
Emergency
If you are having severe pain in the area and a lump is formed consult the doctor. Shortness of breath with chest pain can be a symptom of a clot in the blood. If any of the above symptoms are noticed then consult the doctor immediately for treatment.
Doctor would advise some tests which would confirm whether the clot is present in the blood or not. If the test is positive then ultrasound would be done to trace the location of the clot.
