PCOD: The Poly Cystic Ovarian Disease
June 9, 2009
Normally a woman has two ovaries located along with the uterus. Main function of the ovaries is to release eggs. Every month one egg matures and passes through the fallopian tube. If fertilization occurs then the egg passes to the uterus through the fallopian tube, but if there is no fertilization then menstrual cycle occurs.
PCOD known as poly cystic ovarian disease (also called PCOS; poly cystic ovarian syndrome) is an ovarian dysfunction in which the maturing egg is not expelled from the ovary. As a result these get collected in the ovary and form cysts.
Diabetic woman taking insulin are at higher risk of developing PCOD. Obesity can be the other cause. Though, main cause of occurrence of poly cystic ovarian disease is hereditary.
PCOD in women can affect their periods (menstrual cycle), fertility, hormone levels and even heart. Affected women have high levels of male hormones, irregular or no menstural cycle and cysts in the ovaries.
Symptoms include irregular menstrual cycle, inability to get pregnant, appearance of hair on chest, face, stomach or toes, acne and oily skin, high cholesterol, hypertension, diabetes, thinning of hair, patches of black or brown colour around the neck, arms, breast or thighs and excessive snoring.
Women with poly cystic ovaries have complications in conceiving and even after conceiving, loss of fetus is very much possible.
There is no specific treatment for cystic ovarian disease but the treatment may be given symptomatically. Medications are given to make periods regular and to control excessive hair growth. Fertility drugs are also prescribed in order to conceive.
If any of these symptoms occur see your gynaceologist. Some blood tests, ultrasound and medically history can easily diagnose the condition.
Alternative systems of medicine like homeopathy are said to be useful in treating PCOD complications. They normally work naturally to regulate periods rather than artificially which is done by an allopath.
