Ovarian Disorders
June 9, 2010
Ovarian disorders do not come into light immediately. They take time and early symptoms are usually suggested in the form of problems associated with periods. Here is an insight into common ovarian disorders.
Ovarian Cysts
Ovarian cysts are usually non malignant but their possibility of becoming cancerous increases considerably after the age of 40.
The cysts are sacs of swelling containing fluids and they may either occur on the ovaries or inside them. The follicle commonly contains cysts. The egg develops inside the follicle. Interestingly, there is another form of cyst called dermatoid cyst which may contain hair or bone portions.
Cysts usually appear singular. Symptoms of ovarian cysts are feeling of excess pressure on the rectum and bladder, pain in pelvic region and swelling in the stomach.
An ultrasound report will always show presence of tiny ovarian cysts which are harmless. But once the cysts disturb functioning of the organs then required treatment must be taken.
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome
The disorder occurs due to hormonal imbalance which leads to no ovulation and excess production of testosterone inside the body of a woman. The disease needs to be treated well since it increases risk of other health problems such as diabetes.
In this syndrome, multiple cysts that develop in the ovaries interrupt the menstrual cycle causing lack of ovulation.
Being overweight, excess facial hair, irregular periods and extremely oily skin that is prone to acne are major symptoms of PCOS.
Ovarian Cancer
When an ovarian cyst becomes cancerous it leads to ovarian cancer. There are hardly any early signals to suggest the cancer.
The condition acts as a silent killer. Abdominal pain, pain in pelvic, abnormal vaginal bleeding, increase in the size of the abdomen (bloating) and frequent urge to urinate are some of the prime symptoms after the cancer develops.
Women who opt for infertility treatments and those who have never had children are at a greater risk of developing ovarian cancer. Having a late menopause also increases the risk.
Long term use of oral contraceptive pills reduces risk of ovarian cancer considerably.
In order to prevent the ovarian disorders the women must remain aware about their body and check with the gynecologist in case of any changes in the pattern of their menstrual cycle.
