Osteoporosis Causes and Symptoms
December 29, 2008
More women than men have risk for Osteoporosis. Osteoporosis actually means: ” porous bones”. More and more women are getting this life-style disturbing disease due to many other health conditions.
Let us first know the causes of osteoporosis. One core cause is nutritional deficiencies. Lack of availability of phosphate and calcium in body may lead to absorption of these ions from the bone.
This is because calcium is required for optimal functioning of the heart, nervous system and other major organs. This may lead to mineral depletion from the bones and ultimately weak bone structure.
Osteoporosis may also because when the rate of formation of new bone is not in harmony with the old bones. The process is known as resoption.
Hormonal deficiency also leads to porous bones. Those women with decreased estrogens and men who are deficient in androgens have a greater risk to develop osteoporosis.
Women who have had history of PMS (i.e. Pre-menstrual symptoms), irregular periods, and depression have a greater chance to develop this disease. After menopause, women must themselves check as this is the peak stage to develop osteoporosis. Increased use of drugs like corticosteroids (to treat Cushing’s syndrome), bone cancer and hereditary history of osteoporosis will obviously show higher tendency to develop this disease. Cigarette smokers also have increased mineral depletion.
Osteoporosis majorly effects sine, thighs and wrist. The early symptoms will include neck pain and pains in lower back without any known reason.
The pain is often distinct in an area and it does not radiate as in migraine patients. Those who have a genetic history of this disease, women with irregular periods, thyroid patients must get annually checked for Bone Mass density. Those with lower BMD must consult physician.
Regular long works and proper exercises may reduce your risks but once osteoporosis is developed you must consult your doctors which exercise to do.
