Nutritional Benefits of Gooseberries

June 9, 2009

Gooseberries are considered as a gift of nature to human mankind for the benefits it provides. No other single fruit or herb is as rich in different nutrients as a gooseberry. Gooseberries contain high amount of Vitamin C along with other nutrients like Vitamin A, iron, calcium, magnesium and potassium. A single gooseberry contains more than 500 mg of Vitamin C than orange, which is highly rich in Vitamin C. Also, the taste of gooseberries makes them a very preferred consumable item. Usually gooseberries are green in color but some gooseberries can be deep purple in color as well.

Types of Gooseberries:
There are two types of gooseberries that exist and they are the European gooseberry and the American gooseberry. Though both types have nearly similar nutritional value, they only differ in color and size. The European ones are larger and offer better taste than the American ones. Some famous American gooseberries include Pixwell, Glenndale, Oregon champion and Welcome. Similarly, some famous European gooseberries are Telegraph, Fredonia, Whitesmith and Clark.

While choosing gooseberries for consumption, it is better if you can get the purple ones. These are very mild in their bitterness and can be consumed in their raw form. If you cannot find the purple ones, then you can use the green gooseberries and try taking them in raw form. If they are too bitter for you, then add them to sugar syrup or fruit salad and consume.

Since gooseberries have great nutritional values, they are a good source for helping people prevent a lot of health disorders. Consumption of this bulbous fruit can help in maintaining and improving eyesight. It also reduces blood sugar and stimulates the secretion of insulin, thus keeping diabetes at bay. Since it contains Vitamin C in plenty, it helps in developing a strong immune system and provides great strengthening to the muscles. The fiber present in gooseberries helps in maintaining a healthy digestive system, thereby removing any worries related to stomach.

With a great taste, this small fruit is very easy to consume and available at many places. Every individual must consume gooseberries as it provides many nutrients inside a small fruit and also helps in maintaining a good health.
