Natural Antiseptics: A Briefing
Herbs and fruits provide us with several trustworthy remedies for better health. Today we talk about foods and herbs that are well known to us and are powerful natural antiseptics.
Honey is used in traditional wound dressing to promote healing. The bacteria are unable to exist in the thick consistency of honey. The concentrated honey works as a good antiseptic and prevents dirt and foreign articles to interfere with the wound healing. Honey, when consumed also serves the same purpose by boosting the natural immunity.
Pineapple is not just a good antiseptic but is also a good source of vitamin A, B and C. It is an astringent and the enzyme, bromelain, present in it is used in protein digestion. Apart from these functions, pineapple in used in traditional remedies to cure kidney stones and infections, stress, bronchitis, inflammation and sore throat. Pineapple juice is often diluted for topical use. Dried or powdered form of fruit is preferred for medicinal purpose.
Turmeric is another easily available natural antiseptic. The paste produced by grinded raw turmeric (rhizomes) with some oil is used to dress the wound. Additionally, it helps in clearing the scars of the wound. It is also consumed with warm milk (1 part mixed with 3 parts of milk) for internal healing. It helps in dissolving bruises.
Tea tree oil has been used since centuries for treating boils, athlete`s foot, corns, calluses, acne and nail fungus. The oil can be used in the concentrated form but in case your skin is too sensitive you may dilute with a vegetable oil or water. Just a few drops are enough to serve the purpose.
Neem is an incredible natural antiseptic. Paste of the leaves is prepared by grinding them in pestle and mortar and putting a few drops of water. The paste when applied topically not just heals but removes the scars as well.
On the other hand, eucalyptus is not just a natural antiseptic but is also helpful in treating headaches, sinusitis, dry coughs and seasonal colds.
Burdock leaves and thyme works well as external antiseptic preparations. Garlic and grapes, work as powerful antiseptics both externally and internally.
