Minerals That Are Toxic To The Body

Mercury, lead and cadmium are some of the most toxic minerals and they harm the body significantly. These minerals are easily found in industrial areas and are easily absorbed by the body through mouth and nasal tract.Lead

Lead paints tobacco smoke and car exhausts are most common source of lead. It is important to note than lead is absorbed more easily through inhalation than by mouth.

As the deposits of the mineral increases it may cause lead poisoning. Characteristic symptoms of lead poisoning are hyperactivity, reduced fertility, high blood pressure and abrupt mood changes.

Certain nutrients like calcium, vitamin C and A help in elimination of lead from the body.

Mercury

Mercury toxicity is more common than any other mineral. It is present in many insecticides and anti-fungal preparations that are used to remove weeds. Hence, most of the commercially grown fruits and vegetables carry high mercury content with them.

It is even present in dental amalgams. Also known as quicksilver, this mineral is a major waste product in industries which flows into water bodies. Hence, most of the seafood would be contaminated with mercury.

Mercury toxicity is characterized by sleep disturbances, irritability, low libido and eye damage. Selenium, vitamin A, C and B-complex are helpful in elimination of mercury from the body.

Cadmium

Cadmium toxicity is less common and it is found in people who smoke excessively. Passive smokes may also develop cadmium toxicity. Source of cadmium toxicity include phosphate fertilizers, old water pipes, and nickel-cadmium batteries.

Cadmium toxicity is characterized by increased risk of heart attack, stroke and bone pain. Hardening of arteries and prostrate problems like prostate enlargement and prostate cancer may develop due to high levels of cadmium in the body.

Prevention

Always drink clean water. Do not drink if there is any doubt about its purity. Use tap water only after boiling it. Due to industrial development the ground water may become contaminated with these toxic minerals.

If there is a sudden change in your health and the reason is unknown then get the water supplied to your house analyzed for the mineral content.

Always cover your mouth and nose while passing through a polluted area. Those who work in toxic environments must wear appropriate equipment like glasses, gloves and masks to protect the body from absorbing them.
