Migraine

Migraine is a form of headache, which is caused by abnormal brain activity due to stress, some food item or some environmental factors that lead to changes in the blood vessels. It can occur on one side of the head (unilateral) or both (bilateral).

Symptoms of migraine include headache, vomiting, sensitivity to light, frequent urination, sweating, chills, diarrhea and many more. In many patients severe pain is felt on one side of the head. Some patients have warning signs before the attack such as visionary disturbances like a temporary blind spot, blurred vision or pain in eye.

Migraine headaches can be lesser or severe. The pain can be felt behind the eye or even at the back of the head and neck. Normally the headaches start on the same side each time. The headache starts slowly and becomes harsh within an hour and may last from 6-48 hours.

Migraine headaches have no specific causes of occurrence. You have to check the cause yourself. Note the time when it usually occurs, what have you eaten that day, how much did you slept and any other possible causative factor. Change these things and you would notice a decrease in headache.

Usually women have higher risk of getting migraine than men. During a menstrual cycle these attacks are more frequent. Also, high intake of salt increases the blood pressure, which can also cause headaches.

When you experience the first symptom start treating it. Drink plenty of water to prevent dehydration (in case of vomiting), place a cool towel on your head and rest in a quite dark room.

No specific treatment is there for migraine as there is no specific symptom.
If you have frequent attacks of migraine then consulting a doctor is necessary. Treatment regime consists of some medication to relieve the symptoms and reduce the frequency of attacks. Exercising is also helpful in limiting the migraine attacks.
