Mental Disorders Common In Women

March 8, 2010

Studies show that women have higher emotional intelligence than men. Their emotional sensitivity puts them at a greater risk of developing mental disorders. These include anxiety disorders, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, depression, bipolar disorder, borderline personality disorder and eating disorders.Anxiety disorder is the name given to several type of disorders associated with anxiety and fear. The disorders cover panic disorder, generalized disorder, phobia, obsessive compulsive disorder, social anxiety disorder, separation anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder.

Panic disorder is characterized by abrupt attacks that arise and remain active for not less than 10 minutes. The patient may feel frequent changes in heart beat and an increased awareness about the functioning of the body.

Generalized anxiety disorder is more common in elderly women. The patient suffers from anxiety because of non-specific issues. The anxiety is related to all small matters in daily life.

Phobia is characterized by excess fear of some animal, environment or body fluid. There are several types of phobias. For example phobia of height, water phobia, snake phobia, etc.

Social anxiety disorder is characterized by either complete social isolation or avoidance of social meetings.

Depression, mood swings, chronic boredom, addiction to certain substances, anxiety, and difficulty in reading are symptoms of ADHD. It affects the organizational skills and relationship management.

Early symptoms of schizophrenia include that the patients reports to see things different than what they are in reality. For example, a curtain on the window may appear to be a ghost.

Depression has more symptoms than one. Loneliness, excess irritability, abrupt behavior, accompanied by an eating disorder is most common symptoms of depression.

Eating disorders are most common in women for one reason that monthly cycle of women tend to aggravate craving of excess salty and sugary foods. Women suffering from hormonal imbalance like PMS and PCOS have mild or severe eating disorder.

Women have a better way of expression of emotions yet expectation at work place as well in home can leave them exhausted.

Frequent fatigue (physical and emotional) should not be ignored as it may gradual make neurons weak. It is good to be busy but the proverb in English “All play and no rest makes Jack a dull boy” has been said for a good reason.
