Manifestations Of Cholera
Cholera is a type of infection, which is caused by bacteria known as Vibrio cholerae. In this, acute diarrhoea condition occurs and is caused by intake of some contaminated food or water. It is commonly seen in children between the age group of 1 and 5 but in unhygienic societies, it is common in all the age groups.
Symptoms
It is a very dangerous disease and can even kill the person suffering from it. Symptoms vary from person to person and also depend upon the extent of the disease. Basic symptoms can be abdominal cramps, dehydration, watery diarrhoea, nausea, low blood pressure, low urine output, sunken eyes, restlessness, increased heart rate, dry mouth and dry skin. Some patients have these symptoms but some patients are asymptomatic. Usually the symptoms start after 2 to 3 days of normal diarrhoea.
Diagnosis
As watery diarrhoea is the main symptom, loss of water from the body is very high. That is why it is important to see the doctor immediately. Doctors would take stool sample and test it for the infected bacteria.
Treatment
Till the results come the patient has to be given water, salt and sugar mixture to cope up with the loss of water. Only fresh homemade food with good hygiene has to be given. Antibiotics are given once the disease is confirmed.
Prevention
Some conditions like drinking boiled or filtered water and eating fresh cooked food can prevent cholera from spreading. Always wash the fruits and vegetables with clean water and peel off before eating. Keep yourself and your surroundings clean. Vaccinations are also available in the market to prevent cholera.
Home Remedies for cholera
Some simple home remedies can be helpful during cholera. Lemon is very effective in killing the bacteria that leads to cholera. Mix lemon in water and drink. Juice of bitter guard mixed with onion juice and lemon juice is also effective in curing cholera but in early stages. Cloves are also very beneficial. Boil some cloves in water and take this preparation at small intervals.
