Managing Vaginal Odor

The natural odor of the vagina is actually a turn-on for men. But the fishy odor of the vaginal is not just repelling to the opposite sex but it may suggest some serious health problem.Cause of Vaginal Odor

Common cause of vaginal odor includes yeast infection, pelvic inflammatory disease, Chlamydia, gonorrhea, bacterial vaginosis, genital herpes or vaginitis.

If there is no irritation or infection yet the vagina is having an indifferent smell than the pH of the area may be disturbed. There are many factors which disturb the pH of the genitals.

Use of scents, bad quality tampons/sanitary pads, oils or lubricants may actually be the cause of the vaginal odor. Vaginal lubricants carry strong chemicals which are harmful. Wearing female condom for a longer time too can cause the smell to develop.

Lack of hygiene may be yet another common cause.

Role of Diet

Smoking and alcohol disturb balance of natural fluids secreted in the vagina. Too much consumption of spicy and oily foods too is unhealthy for vagina. This is because such foods add bulk of toxins to the body. Hence the smell is of the accumulated toxins.

Solution

It is important to allow good bacteria to grow on the vaginal area. Therefore certain things need to be taken care of. The vagina must not be washed more than two times in a day. This washes away healthy bacteria from the area. Washing with water after urination is sufficient.

The area becomes sweaty very easily. Thus, it is important to keep the pubic hair trimmed in order to prevent development of smell due to perspiration.

Wear only cotton underwear. The synthetic material tends to react with the skin and produce foul smell. Keep the area clean during periods. Trim the pubic hair regularly. Change the napkin timely.

Apply for yogurt for 5 minutes on the area and wash off with water. Yogurt carries bacteria which maintain optimal pH of the area.

A few drops of tea tree oil can also be applied to the area. It is a natural anti-fungal agent and helps in fighting mild irritation or infection on the area.

Increase intake of zinc, selenium and vitamin C in your diet. These nutrients boost immune system and thus indirectly contribute in fighting vaginal odor.
