Male Breasts: Causes And Solutions
January 29, 2010
Male breasts or gynaecomastia is occurrence of visible breasts in men. Most of the teen boys too develop breasts during puberty but as they start to grow older and hormone levels of testosterone become optimal the breasts fade away and they become flat chested.
But it has been found that obese boys, even after losing weight, may not be able to completely lose the breast tissue. This becomes a reason of great embarrassment for them.
Usually, reason for male breasts is unknown. Estrogen is present in small quantities in male body in order to support sperm production and maintain optimal bone density.
Yet, it has been found that hormonal imbalance which leads to increase in level of estrogen in the male body and decease in testosterone is a well known cause for male breasts. For the same reason men with breasts often have extra fat around their belly. Other pituitary gland disorder (gland responsible for regulation of hormones) also leads to growth of male breasts.
A genetic disorder called Klinefelter syndrome in which the male carries an extra X chromosome also results in abnormal breast growth. Other genetic disorders responsible for the trouble are myotonic dystrophy, Kallmann syndrome and hypogonadotropic hypogonadism.
Myotonic dystrophy is the disorder in which the muscles of the body contract but are unable to relax properly and hence become weak and die. In hypogonadotropic hypogonadism the testes are unable to function properly due to hormonal imbalance.
Other factors include alcoholism, HIV, obesity, malnutrition, stress, ageing and Herpes Zoster infection.
Solution
Gynecomastia vests and bras are available for men in order to support the breast tissue. Some even help in pressing them and making the chest look less heavy. Male bra is not a new thing. Men suffering from male breasts have been wearing it to support the breast tissue just like women wear it.
Male breasts can be removed surgically. Here is what you need to know about it. Men who are healthy and have a firm skin can greatly benefit from the surgery. It takes about 1 to 3 hours to complete and a healthy male can recover completely within a few months. The candidate may be asked to wear a garment for a week to heal the bruises and swelling of the operated area.
