Mal-Positioning of the Baby
June 17, 2009
During the birth process, the head of the baby appears first. But sometime this natural process is altered which leads to complications. Baby mal-position is a condition in which indifferent positioning of the baby may lead to abnormal delivery.
The way in which the baby first appears outside through the uterus is called presentation. These are breech presentation, upside down presentation, face presentation and shoulder presentation. In breech presentation, buttock or feet appears first instead of the head. Possibility of such a presentation is 1 out of every 40 births in any given population.
Breech presentation may lead to serious problems like premature placental rupture, internal organ disruption, hip dislocation, neck dislocation, prolapsed cord, uterine rupture, genital edema and intracranial bleeding.
Upside down presentation occurs in 13% of birth processes. The positioning of the baby is upside down and if the positioning is not handled well, the baby may be born with a “corn headâ€. This type of presentation can be avoiding if the women regularly receives chiropractic care.
Chiropractic cares is helpful in preventing face presentation. Here, face appears first and neck appears next as an extension. It may be caused due to flat pelvic, neck spasms of the fetus, anencephaly or multiple feotus. 3000 deliveries occur with face presentation.
The last type of presentation is shoulder presentation. Its frequency is in 200 to 300 births. In this type of presentation, the shoulder appears first. This is very serious form of delivery due to additional complications. There are many factors which lead to shoulder presentation. Multiple babies (twins, triplets, etc.) increase the risk of shoulder delivery.
If the shape of the foetus has been unusual from initial stages, birth with a shoulder presentation is most likely to happen. Presence of excess amniotic fluid, called hydramnios is yet another triggering factor. In case a woman has already had more than three babies she is most likely to give birth to a baby with shoulder presentation.
