Maintaining Genital Hygiene
Genital hygiene is very important to prevent the infections from being developed and also to control their spread in all ages and both sexes.
In women, only the external part of vagina has to be cleaned. The internal portion of vagina produces a natural substance that keeps it clean. But when the part is cleaned using soap, it may lead to the entry of bacteria and can develop infection. Therefore, over cleaning of the vagina is also harmful.
The external part of the vagina should be cleaned once during the day using mild soap and water only. The area should be cleaned from front to back so as to avoid any bacteria around the anus from contacting the vagina or urethra. Anal opening should be cleaned in the last.
Washing the vagina during menstrual cycle can cause bacteria to spread. If you use good sanitary pads, then there is no need to wash the part again and again.
Good cotton panties should be used instead of synthetic ones. Deodorants and perfumes should not at all be applied directly to the genital areas. Wear loose underwear to prevent the skin from getting infections due to perspiration.
In men, the penis, scrotal area and anus should be cleaned once a day. Special care should be taken to clean the head of the penis. Using warm water, which acts as a lubricant, can do this effectively.
The foreskin should be gently pulled back for cleaning. If this area is not cleaned properly, it can result in bad odour and an increased risk of infection. It is important to return the foreskin to its position after cleaning. In small boys only the penis should be cleaned and the foreskin should not be pulled back forcefully.
The area should be cleaned after sexual intercourse, even if wearing a condom, to prevent bacterial infection. If either partner has an infection, they should tell the other partner and extra care should be taken while doing sex. If sex toys are used, then these should also be cleaned before and after use. Many manufacturers provide cleansing wipes or equipment for cleaning.
Children should also be taught to their clean hands after going to toilet every time.
