Low Hemoglobin?
July 30, 2009
Low hemoglobin may lead to anemia. Increased irritability, early fatigue, pale skin is common signs of low hemoglobin. More women than men suffer from low RBC count. Cause may be excess loss of blood during menstruation or lack of nutritious diet.
Here are simple ways of increasing your RBC count.
Role of Diet
Deficiency of iron is the number one cause of low hemoglobin. Supplementation with iron capsules is a good option if you do not have time to eat a well balanced meal. But excess consumption of iron capsules may cause acidity and headache. Consult with your physician before starting supplementation.
Meat is an excellent source of iron. Liver, amongst all meats is the best source of iron. For vegetarians, spinach is just enough. Try drinking spinach juice daily instead of eating a meal made of spinach leaves. Honey is a rich source of iron, manganese and copper. Include honey in your breakfast. Adding honey to apple juice and drinking it daily is one of the trusted remedies for low RBC count in blood.
Eat lots of citrus fruits and green vegetables. Oranges, blueberries, strawberries, lemon are all excellent source of vitamin C. This vitamin helps in boosting the immune system thus helps in development of RBCs.
To wind it up, foods that are rich source of iron includes oysters, sardines, cod, wheat germ, turnip greens, dates, almonds, jaggery, raisins and pulses.
An occasional steam bath, sunbath and bath with Epsom salt boosts production of RBCs in blood. Bath with Epsom salt can be carried out for 10 to 15 minutes. These baths must be taken once in a week.
Increasing Hemoglobin with Yoga
Yoga can help in increasing RBC count in two ways. One is by making use of breathing exercises and the other is by doing special asanas.
Breathing exercises like Ujjayi, Suryabhedana, Anuloma Viloma and Kapalbhatti increases circulation of blood and improve functioning of the entire circulatory system.
The asanas include Shavasana, Paschotthanasana and Sarvanagasana. Shavasana is also called as Corpse pose. This asana, the person lies down on back hands relaxed parallel to body. Deep breathing is practised with eyes closed.
In Sarvangasana, the person needs to stand with full weight on his/her shoulders. Paschimotthanasana means to take a posterior stretch.
