Lavender Wonder

The very name sends a soothing pulse throughout the body. This east European herb is well known fro its medicinal and aromatic properties. It is cultivated on large scale in countries like Britain, Australia, Russia, France and Bulgaria.

Lavender yields volatile oils which is used for treatment of various health disorders especially insomnia, stress and depression. The credit goes to the presence of perillyl alcohol and linalool (a type of terpenoid). According to a popular study, the perineal pain after childbirth was relieved by bathing in bathing water enriched with lavender oil.

It is even prescribed by German commission for discomforts related to CNS and GIT. Interestingly, not many people know that Lavender can also be taken in the form of tea. In fact, The German commission E monograph recommends a daily dosage of 5 to 10 grams of Lavender tea.

Although lavender tea bags are available through some standard brands but in case you wish to prepare the brew at home, take 10 grams of lavender leaves and put them in 1 cup of boiling water.  Consume the freshly prepared tea daily (about 750 ml).

If you wish to prepare tincture for internal application, half tsp of lavender powder will make up to 2 ml of tincture. If you think of using lavender oil internally make sure you consult a doctor before doing it.

There are some short-term side effects of lavender. For example, internal usage may lead to nausea. If used properly it is safe enough to use even during pregnancy.

Although there are no clinical proofs but it is believed that lavender enhances the effect of CNS depressants like narcotic drugs (e.g. Medicines containing morphine) and benzodiazepines (e.g. medicines containing salts of diazepam, alprazola and lorazepam).

These drugs are used for relief from pain, anxiety and insomnia. Lavender is available worldwide through different manufacturers. But it’s important that you know whom to bye them from.

The herb when used with all its strength and potency has known to show excellent CNS soothing effects.
